On the therapeutic qualities in (surrealist) art:

Many works in surrealist graphic design were “perverse, obscure, and willfully dysfunctional“ (Poynor 2010), depicting the most unhealthy abominations of their artist’s imaginations. By doing so, the designers give their audience an opportunity to deal with situations and ideas commonly regarded as un-normal guilt-free. This becomes possible by when we can see the frightening scenarios in a controlled environment, for instance in a museum. In case of feeling discomfort, the viewer has the option to laugh the matter off and to judge the artist as a madman (Schuster, 1990 p. 93).
